The University of Saint Joseph (USJ), formerly known as Instituto Inter-Universitário de Macao (IIUM), was created in 1996 by the Catholic Foundation for Higher Education with the aim of extending to Macao the considerable experience of the Catholic University of Portugal in the areas of Business, International Relations and Education, and taking up the challenge of East-West dialogue that in the past had been a mark of Catholic higher education in Macao.

Using English as its medium of internal communication and instruction, and teaching Chinese and Portuguese as languages to be known by all, USJ sets the stage for its international staff and multinational student-body. USJ is a truly international university; students and staff come from over 50 different countries, fostering a rich international and multicultural academic experience. In our academy, East and West carry on the centuries-old dialogue through which Macao acquired its unique identity.

Close links to the Catholic University of Portugal and to Catholic universities in Angola, Brazil and Mozambique, set us in the privileged position of being able to contribute to Macao’s present calling as a bridge between Portuguese-speaking countries.

As an international University, USJ has established a number of cooperation agreements with recognized institutions in the Europe, United State of America, Australia, Asia and Africa to provide an enriching experience to our students and faculty members.

With it’s stead development, USJ has been granted membership in the following international organizations: International Association of Universities (IAU), International Federation of Catholic University (IFCU), European Association of Institutions in Higher Education (EURASHE), Associação das Universidades de Língua Portuguesas/ The Association of Portuguese Speaking Universities (AULP), Association of Universities of Asia and Pacific (AUAP), International Association of University Presidents (IAUP) and Conférence Mondiale des Institutions Universitaires Catholiques de Philosophie (COMIUCAP).

USJ is organised into the following academic units: Faculty of Religious Studies, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Administration and Leadership, Faculty of Psychology and Education, Faculty of Creative Industries and an Institute of Science and Environment.  A Lifelong Learning Office provides professional support to all the faculties in running non-degree courses for a wider public as well as in providing services to government departments.
